WORK SESSION ABOUT MEDIEVAL INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

First activity-COMPREHENSIVE READING:

I read a text about “A trobadour in Spain” and I am going to write the key words on the digital board:

-Secular music: is music that is not used as part of a religious ceremony.
-Troubadours: persons that composed poems designed to be sung, their songs expressed feelings preferably of a romantic nature. They were noblemen, even kings.
-Minstrel: Singer and musician who propagated the music created by the troubadours, reciting poetry, playing instruments, dancing, singing, and playing games. They usually came from humble origins (poor)

Second activity-MEDIEVAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS:

-Images on digital board: portative organ, viola, bagpipes (gaita), psaltery, hurdy-gurdy (zanfoña), harp (harpa)
-Diference between chordophone or aerophone instruments.
-Recognize medieval instruments througt miniatures of pictures and videos from Cantigas de Santa María by King Alfonso X of Castile.

Thrid activity-MUSIC AND EMOTION

-Compare the music by medieval troubadours and the singer-sonwriters today:

-VIDEO ONDAS DO MAR DE VIGO, BY MARTIN CODAX
-VIDEO AMAR PELOS DOIS, BY SALVADOR SOBRAL

-Examples by others famous Spanish singer songwriters: Joaquín Sabina, Joan Manuel Serrat, Pedro Guerra...
