Playing with the parts of the cell

THE PARTS OF THE CELL

Shared by Virginia Navarro:

Practical classroom activity.

Students need to know the names of the organelles in a cell and their function, as well as label those organelles in a picture. To do so, they have to draw both the animal cell and the plant cell with their main organelles, so that they are doing a cross-curricular activity (Arts) .

In order to get them practising the names of the organelles, I will play "Odd-One -Out" (students play in pairs; they choose 4 words from the topic, one of which does not fit into the category and they need to describe why). i.e. Mitochondria- Nucleus-Starch- Vacuoles etc.

Also, I will get them writing the functions of each organelle by means of "Two Truths and a Lie" (Students do this individually. They write 3 statements about the functions of the cell organelles , two of them right and the other wrong. Then, each student say it out loud and the rest of the classmates have to guess.)

For fast finishers, I have an activity called "Glossary of the unit", so that they write down the key words on post-its and then we put the words together in a collaborative poster. They also can develop their creativity by making a comic as the organelles of the cell, the animal cell and the plant cell as the characters.

I will show them these websites to inspire them: https://theawkwardyeti.com/ and  http://www.sciencecartoonsplus.com/

Then, we may have fun reading the comics.

Finally, we will play "Back to the board!"

Two students stand with their backs to the board, an image of an organelle of the cell is shown or writen on the board and they have to ask questions to guess what the organelle is.
This way, students review the content by speaking.

The classroom language used through all the activity will be positive, so that students are reinforced and encouraged to engage in the activity.

i.e. Great! Fantastic! Good job! Excellent! That was funny! Well done! That is a very good sentence! etc
