PRACTICAL CLASSROOM ACTIVITY: BIOLOGY AND GEOLOGY 3ºESO COURSE

The topic to teach is “Blood and blood vessels”, which is included in the unit about the circulatory and excretory systems.

I present the content by asking the students one of the following questions:

-What is the main function of blood?,
-How does the blood circulate around our body?
-How many liters do we have, what organs filter blood and produce urine?...

As they answer them I praise them with positive English expressions and

I also write down all the key concept vocabulary: Blood cells, White cells, plasma, red blood cells, red bone marrow, platelets, bleeding, veins, arteries, capillaries, blood test, blood pressure…

After that, we play some vocabulary games with some words from the blackboard.

Firstly “Two truths and a lie”, the students in groups of four have to write 3 descriptions about one word and the rest have to guess which one is false.

Example: Arteries

a) carry blood away from the heart
b) carry blood to the heart
c) contains plasma and cells.

Secondly, “Rhyming triplets”, by asking them to write words that rhyme with the key vocabulary.

For example: blood, flood, mud, bud…

Thirdly, I ask the students to write questions about blood circulation into two categories:
-Questions they can answer,
-questions they cannot answer yet.

With the questions they cannot answer yet I write the answers with uncompleted sentences on the board and the students have to finish them.

Then at the end of the lesson they have to mime a sentence and other students have to guess it.

For example:

1.- In addition to blood, the blood circulatory system includes the blood vessels and the…..

2.-The blood cells are formed in the…………………… located inside some bones, such as femur.

3.- Red blood cells are responsible for…………………….

4.-Blood maintains body temperatura at about……………. So that the metabolism functions properly.

5.- Blood colour is ………….. due to…………… 5.-Capillaries connect………………………

Another interesting activity to revise blood vessels concept can be: “Compare and contrast” in which students identify 3 similarities and 3 differences between “Arteries”, “veins” and “capillaries”.
