Make something useful and Mind the Gap in P.E.

At the beginning of the course I use to introduce some Basic Physical Education vocabulary. In my school, P.E is taught in English only in 2nd course of ESO. For that, next year I am going to use some of the strategies seen in the course.

For example, “MIND THE GAP”. Specifically, students have to research “fun facts about P.E”, like:

-The largest muscle in your body is...
-25% of your bones are located in...

They have to find sentences leaving out the main piece of information for other students to guess. It's a great idea for students to find fun information about specific physical education vocabulary, which they can then share with their peers.

Every student has to find at least five fun facts that they will share the  next day in the classroom working in groups of 3. They will speak and try to discover the missing words, and after every group have to share in the blackboard with all the class. They have investigate about fun P.E vocabulary, they have to write different sentences and they have share speaking in small and great group.

Other strategy I have found very interesting to do in my classes is “MAKE SOMETHING USEFUL”. In Physical Education the use of recycled material for all kinds of activities and games is becoming more and more frequent every year.

In this case, I propose a unit in which students have to recycle plastic materials to use in form of games in class. First, they have to investigate, looking on the internet, how to use plastic bottles to do games, they have to modify them at home, and finally show in class to the others how to play.

For example, plastic bottles that we could use in a game called "softball”. We cut a bottle of fabric softener leaving the handle and with a ball you could play throwing and catching.

You can tell the students to do the same plastic object to play a specific game or you can give the possibility to create their own plastic objects to play their own games.
