Activities for 1º ESO

Related to Unit 5 of the student’s book. Sports

Time: 2 lessons.

Cross-curricular: Physical Education.

LESSON 1

1. What are you doing?

(Groups of 3 students) Students think about names of sports (3 sports per group) while the teacher checks the lists to avoid repetitions. Then every group must mimic one sport while the other groups guess it.

There must be three roles in every team: one member is the spokesperson of the group; another student should mimic the sport, and the third one must write the name of the sport on the blackboard once his team guesses it. The students’ roles must switch every round .

Key structure: present continuous. Elena is + verb + ing.

Key vocabulary: names of sports, do/play/go + name of the sport.

2. The Hotseat. 

Two students sit in the “hotseat” in the front row with their backs towards the board. They must find out the names of famous sportmen/women that are being shown on the whiteboard. They ask questions and the rest of the class can give them clues.

Key vocabulary: adjectives related to physical descriptions.

Key structures: How old is…? What colour is/are…? Is he tall/ medium height ..? What is she wearing?

This will help us to review content from previous units where students learned about physical descriptions and verbs: to be, to have got.

3. Internet search: (pair work) 

The teacher will show pictures of female sportswomen, who unfortunately are not so well-know, or Paralympic sportsmen, for students to find out who they are, what they are famous for, how many awards they have won, etc.

LESSON 2

4. What do we know?

In pairs, students write key words about sports. In my case, my students have learned about basketball, hockey, and tennis in Physical Education, so to link that knowledge to my class I have written down the names of these sports.

Key vocabulary: sports, equipment, action verbs.

Key structures: modal verbs can/can’t, must/mustn’t

The number of sports should be reduced to a limited number of sports or the vocabulary list may be endless.


After some minutes, they move around the class to fill in missing information and self-correct other students’ charts.

5. Written Assignment.

The students choose one sport (of the ones discussed) and fill in this template, they can ask for help to their Physical Education teacher. This activity helps to summarize and assess the two previous lessons
